Grind is protest. Three words that echo loudly inside of the underground. The bastard child of punk and heavy metal, grind has been breaking bones and smashing politics since the ’80s. Comprised of energetic and aggressive playing and an anarchist’s view of the world, grind is one of our greatest weapons in the current age.
Canada’s Fuck The Facts started in the late ’90s as an unnamed one-man solo project by Topon Das. The band has gone through a few lineup changes and alterations in style, but my favourite lineup is the current one with the incredible Mel Mongeon on vocals. Her aggravated wails have become a defining feature of the band’s sound.
The band’s sound has encapsulated grindcore, noise, and death metal elements and Das has stated many times that he does not want to be held down by genres. And this is the brilliance of Fuck The Facts. By combining grind with noise, death metal, and other genres of music, all of these various styles of music adopt grindcore’s “grind is protest” ethic.
Canada has a great selection of left-leaning bands that encapsulate many diverse genres of music. Fuck The Facts are not only one of the best, but a great introduction to the Canadian scene.
Grind will forever be the spirit of protest.
